Assume you have a 1080i HD signal source (e.g. XBox 360). Given the specs below, which TV do you think the end result picture would look better on, assuming all other specs are nearly identical?
1. 1080i TV, but with 1024x1080 max resolution
2. 720p TV, but with 1366x768 max resolution
720p HD signal translates into 1280x720 and 1080i (or p) translates into 1920x1080 resolution, so neither of the above examples match up perfectly. I know that the TV compensates for the differences between its native resolution and the HD resolution, but I'm not sure what would be better.
I wish more manufacturers matched their resolutions with HD resolutions better.
Also, I've read that 720p and 1080i are very close in quality but I think that means a 720p signal on a 720p TV -vs- 1080i signal on a 1080i TV. So the question is, which of the following is better?
1. a 1080i source on a 720p TV OR
2. a 720p source on a 1080i TV
Thanks for you insight!
What is the best TV resolution for different HD signals?
there are tvs withe 1920x1080 resolution you know that will be the norm soon . that is the best resolution so far. it will display 1080p , and 1080i with all the detail, as for you question . the 1024x1080 is better it has more pixels and can display more detail. any one with more pixles can display more of the detail in a hd picture than one with less pixels .
and to clear somethings up. 1080i and 720p are close in quality on an 720p tv , thats one with 1366x768 or around there. the 1080i has more detail but the tv has to scale it to show on the tv . 1080i is in fact every other line ( thats odds then evens) every 60th of a second and 720p is everyline every 30th of a second. and to humans the interlacing or i every 60th of a second is to fast for us to notice any anything but a nice picture. so go with the 1024x1080 that will show more detail in 1080i. but it cant show 1080p . \and they say you cant even tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p on screens smaller that 55 inches
oh and let me guess its a hitachi. they are the only ones that make that resolution. and to me its great. hitachi is a great company and they make great plasmas go with that
Reply:The 1080i will have better resolution on a 720p or a 1080i source. If you have only a 720p source but have a 1080i TV, the TV would be capable of showing more lines of res, but the source would not be offering the higher res.
Reply:first off, the better overal resolution is 720p.
1080i = 1,080 lines interlaced. This means that the signal shows every other line of resolution at a given time (ie I I I I I I I I I ) then goes back and fills in the space in the next frame (ie IIIIIIIIIIII)
720p = 720 lines progressive. This means that all 720 lines are displayed at the same time. Giving you a sharper resolution.
For you questions
#1 is the only one that is possible. A 720p source cannot be displayed (truely) on a 1080i TV. (just try selecting the 720p option on XBOX 360 for a TV that only has 1080i capabilities)
#1 is the better solution
All major cable and SAT signals are displayed in 1080i.
