Can cats recongnize TV shows?

My cat never really payed attention to the TV when it's on, but when he was a kitten and Animal Planet Most Extreame count down came on an it started playing that weird alien like music he would start to meow and look at the Rv and roll around like he was trying to play with the TV. Now he downst do that, but he'll always at least look when it comes on, does he recognize the TV show and why would he be interested in one TV show? Why would it matter if it was most extreame or like, animal cops?

Can cats recongnize TV shows?
Yeah, my cat LOVES kerrang! and The Simpsons. She loves and Elliot Minor and MCR. Mainly because i play and watch them alot.

When the music is on, hear ears will prick up and she'll lift her head and look at the source of the sound until it stops. The same with the T.V. She just sits infront of it until it is finished, and then she'll go and get something to eat.

Hope this answered your question!

Reply:One of my cats loved an advert for fresh fish! not for the pictures though, she would get really upset and start crying at the tv because of the noise! (bagpipes) they drove her mad, any loud high pitched noises like that and she would get upset. I think it is the sound rather than the pictures, but loved your question, brought back great memories as she has passed away 1 year ago, but still love her daily she is such a miss. =^..^=
Reply:Actually, cats can't see the tv screen. Something about the way the screen is can't compute with a cats eyes, so all they see is black. They can hear the tv, but can't actually see whats being played on the screen.

You can leave in on animal planet, so she can hear the animal sounds, but she won't actually be able to see it.
Reply:As a matter of fact, they can. I know critters who have very specific preferences in music and television shows. In fact, a friend of mine has a cat who will try to change the dial if someone takes it off a show she is watching.
