First off, The all the TV stations here(including Univision too) and in other parts of the state have been giving a good amount of press over Kyle Turris coming to Arizona,. At last nights game every TV station(ABC 15, 12News, 3TV, CBS5, Fox10, Univision) were at the arena coving Kyle Turris first NHL game. I haven't see this much press about the anything Coyotes since the betting scandal involving Rick Tocket.
1. The Arizona Republic I give a B for being consistant and going in-deapth on this team. But an F for being a Ultra-Liberal Pro Illiegal immigration newspaper. LOL
2. An F to the TV media stations for failing to keep up with the Yotes coverage. They were alot better in the past when the Coyotes were winning, even had frequent interviews with the staff and players. The Phoenix Mercury has an even worse fan base than the Coyotes and they get more press coverage.
Local TV news coverage of your NHL team, what grade do you give them?
I live hear in the Valley of the Sun. I am a Coyotes season ticket holder. Finally some good coverage because Turris is now here.
I agree the local channels and papers coverage of hockey is very weak.. Grade an F.
FSN Arizona is very good thanks to Panger and Strader (A). But I prefer the NHL Network channel on Direct TV, they have the best hockey coverage and nightly recaps and highlights. I can watch that channel all day long. If you don't have it, you are missing out if you are a huge hockey fan like I am. A+
Reply:I live in Mesa. Report It
Reply:F...there is more news about basketball, baseball and football in their offseasons then reporting on the Av's. Better not blink or you are bound to miss their coverage on the team or NHL...
*I am excluding Altitude, not a local news stataion, they don't count. I'm talking about 9news, channel 7, etc...
Reply:i live in cali and all our local news sees hockey as a joke...they only covered the team during the last game of the final and claimed theyve been rooting for them since the start but where i live they worship and pretty much lick the lakers' balls so they wouldnt know anything about our great sport.. i give them a D- because even after anaheim won the cup and showed all of california that a championship team dose exist in ca they still root for sorry *** kobe and his lame wad lakers..hockey dose not get any respect from our local news casters in CA
Reply:C but it's tough to grade them really. Here in Texas, it's all about high school football. My closest Central Hockey League team doesn't get much coverage, though it doesn't help that they played like ****. I don't believe any local English-language channel showed their games LIVE on TV (you could see them on the CHL website though) but Saturday night home games were on Televisa, similar to Univision and Telemundo, helping to increase ratings and fan awareness of the game in nearby Reynosa, Mexico.
PS this is definately a growing market, though we're closer to Monterrey NL than we are to San Antonio lol. Did anyone know that ice/street hockey is the fastest growing sport in Mexico right now? !Si senor(a)! :)
ps Yotes dude: Everyone living in America whether if 1 or 10 generations or more, has roots somewhere else and not all of them came legally or voluntarily. Do your research buddy.
Reply:I will give FSN Ohio an A minus. They do a really good job of explaining what happens, but sometimes Danny Gare states the obvious, and he pauses in the middle of a sentence for a brief second to find the correct word to say. Still, they act really professional, and they are not biased, which I really like. They always interview players and staff of the other team, not just Columbus's. They also are very courteous towards the team Columbus is playing and always compliments the other team if they make a good play or score a pretty goal. Also, FSN Ohio does an alright job splitting the season between showing Basketball and Hockey. They have 2 channels so that if Basketball is on one, Hockey will be on the other, but I only receive one channel for some reason.
Reply:We have great sports coverage in Philly, but the media goes soft on the Flyers. I think it stems from the time in the early 1990's when Ed Snider got sore at a local sports radio station (610-WIP) that the Flyers happened to own.
I think the Flyers have it way too easy in this town. They don't get scrutinized as much as the Eagles and Phillies do. Of course, I don't like the Phillies anyway and most of their fans are soft between the ears.
Reply:I'd give the local NY stations a C. They usually cover highlights from the 3 metro-area hockey teams, but rarely other highlights (unless something unbelievable happens). They don't mention (or go into detail about) trades, call-ups, minors, or anything else.
The newspapers... the Daily News and Post seem to do a pretty good job covering hockey. I was a little pissed that the back cover today was about the Yankees winning and going to 2-1, as opposed to the Rangers clinching a playoff spot, but this is clearly a baseball town. I'd give the newspapers a B+, even though larry brooks is an idiot.
That's ignoring any MSG/MSG+ coverage, I think they do a pretty decent job. Shows such as "Inside the Rangers" help familiarize people with the team, there are interviews with lots of people involved with the team, they have "Hockey Night Live" and other such broadcasts... not to mention recently, the knicks have been demoted to MSG2 while the Rangers keep the real channel (which didn't happen as recently as february!!)
Reply:im failing my news stations.
they couldnt care less about hockey.
they show a highlight if the leafs win, but that's it.
the only station that really cares now is Sportsnet lol. They stood behind the leafs all season long.
Reply:F. Very rarely is there news about the Wild, and nothing about the Stars (of course not, this is Minnesota!). All the local news stations are out of Fargo, ND.
Newspapers:
Fargo Forum- F. A tiny little blip on the front page, that's it.
Star Tribune- B+. At least they have a page about the NHL.
Reply:I miss the days of Ed Whalen and Calgary 7 broadcasting every Flames game. When he retired in '99, it was a huge loss to hockey in Calgary. And worse, he passed away in 2001.
Now, the coverage goes to Sportsnet West or TSN or CBC HNIC. CBC doesn't emphasize non-Maple Leafs teams, so the first two will do. They get 8/10.
Reply:fsn detroit is great !! and so is the local station that carries the games . my suggestion to you is to get direct T.V. we get the fsn stations from around the country as well as msn and vs etc.. so this makes catching any game you want much easier. without having to buy an nhl package.

Thats why
Reply:I'd give the Buffalo-Area news stations a B. They always show highlights of every game. When the playoffs come around, it is always the biggest story and they spend at least the first 10 minutes of the show talking about it. One of the stations(channel 7) would do an hour long show at the party in the plaza before the game as well.
I'd give the Buffalo News a B as well. There is normally around three articles about the Sabres per game day, and two when there isn't one
Reply:F-
Living in Pittsburgh is ghastly. The Pens could win 16 straight games in the post season, all by shutout; and the lead story for the sports reporter would be Big Ben's new hair cut (no freakin lie).
