What does an RS232 lead do when connecting my Sky box to my 42" plasma TV? I have just bought the TV and noticed that there is a connection for RS232 on the back of both the Sky box and the TV and assume that thes means I can connect the Sky box to the TV without the use of scart leads, as the TV does not have any scart connecitions. Are these leads easy to get hold of, and are they available to buy in any high street electrical shops?
TV lead question.......?
An RS232 cable is known to most as a VGA cable. At a retail store ask for a VGA cable. They are your typical cable to link a computer to a monitor. they come in all different lengths including custom order lengths. I just install a 57' RS232 cable in a confereence room. Typically for a Sky Box or for any cable or satelite box there is multiple connection choices. RS232, Component Video, HDMI, and DVI. HDMI is the best. then DVI, then RS232. then Component Video

Most factually incorrect answer more like ;-)
An RS232 is NOT a VGA cable. Report It
Reply:The socket on the TV will be for a VGA PC connection but cheaper models might not provide facilities to use it. Does the TV have video and audio RCA (Phono) sockets and remote control options to select AV instead of TV? If so, you can try a SCART to RCA cable (3 RCA plugs) or SCART to RCA plug and an RCA cable. You could obtain these from Maplin.co.uk or via searching for "SCART to RCA cable"
Reply:Yes you can get an RS232 from any good electrical store. Its just another means of communication between two devices and is a little smaller than scart but not as well screened nor can it carry so much data. Surprized there is no scart connection on your new telly??
Reply:There is no need to connect the RS232 socket to your TV.
You most definitely cannot use it as an alternative to HDMI, SCART or composite connections as reported by one responder. i.e. it is not for getting the picture from the Sky box to the TV.
The RS232 port was included by Sky for add on devices and controllers. For example some people connect their Sky box to their computer. The RS232 connection is used to control the Sky box, but again it has nothing to do with the picture.
If your TV has some internal device that can be controlled by a Sky box (maybe a hard drive video recorder) then you can get a cable from PC World.
Reply:I believe the RS232 is known as serial port, for serial data comunication, in TV it usually uses for inputing hex command to the TV, (like remote commander).
Reply:In telecommunications, RS-232 is a standard for serial binary data interconnection between a DTE (Data terminal equipment) and a DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment). It is commonly used in computer serial ports. you can buy them at any computers shop.
